As the Belvedere Vodka head mixologist Claire Smith sure has one hell of a job. Daily Front Row recently caught up with the cocktail maven to discuss everything from cocktail trends to bar necessities. Here’s a portion of the interview:
How can you tell the difference between top-shelf vodka and bargain-basement dwellers?
The worse the vodka, the colder it’s generally served to mask the bad flavor. Cheaper vodka has a restricted flavor profile—it’s more akin to hairspray or nail polish remover. Belvedere has broad strokes of vanilla, cream, and black pepper. The best temperature to serve vodka is straight out of the refrigerator, like white wine.
What are your favorite summer cocktail trends? It’s all about using fresh, local ingredients. Right now, we’re seeing a lot of tea. A great brunch cocktail is our Pineapple Mary. It’s basically a Bloody Mary using pineapple juice instead of tomato juice, paprika versus pepper, and Belvedere Bloody Mary. You get the sensation of a Bloody Mary without the heaviness.
What ingredients are you obsessed with right now?I’m interested in anything herbal, and I’m moving away from the sweeter flavors. We’ve been experimenting a lot with rosemary, sage, and jasmine. I’m also into spices like ginger, cardamom, and chili. Hot flavors tend to cool the body down.
What’s your ultimate party-planning tip?
Make a great punch and pour it into a beautiful vintage glass bowl, so you’re not the person in the kitchen making cocktails all night long. I always make a punch and leave a couple cocktail ideas on the fridge in case partygoers want to get creative.
What’s an unexpected must-have ingredient everyone should stock behind their bar?
Ginger beer! Other flavors might weaken while you drink, but ginger continues to refresh your palate, which means you can drink for a bit longer.

I’m not a huge fan of fast food, but even I have to admit that all the major fast food chains have really stepped their game up when it comes to those icy, fruity drinks they serve. You’ve got everything from Wendy’s Homestyle Lemonade to Taco Bell’s Frutista Freeze. These drinks are already pretty tasty on their own but add a little vodka, tequila, or rum and you’ve got yourself quite the Lushworthy treat. For all my fellow lushes out there I’ve come up with a list of popular fast food beverages and how you can spike ‘em. But do remember you’re spiking your drink at home! I repeat, you are spiking your drink at home! We’re all adults so I don’t think I need to go into the whole drinking and driving spiel. Oh, and shout out to my extra creative drink names. Here goes…
“The How Ya’ll Doing” – McDonald’s Sweet Tea & Sweet Tea Flavored Vodka
“The Anti Coco Loso” – Wendy’s Lemonade, Vodka & A Splash Of Pineapple Juice
“The McLush” – McDonald’s McCafe Frozen Strawberry Lemonade & Vodka
“The Have It Your Way” – Burger King’s Frozen Coke & Rum
“The We Don’t Want No Beef” – Taco Bell’s Pina Colada Frutista Freeze & Coconut Flavored Rum
“The Hedgehog” – Any Sonic Limeade & Tequila
Is it just me or does it seem like there’s a holiday to drink to almost every other week? I’m not mad at that at all, just making an observation. And it looks like the latest holiday to drink to is none other than Mexican Independence Day which takes place on September 16th. I see no reason why you shouldn’t celebrate Mexican Independence Day with a margarita, but if you’re looking for a margarita that’s a little on the creative side then you may want to give the Don Julio Pomegranate Margarita a shot. The Pomegranate Margarita is made using Don Julio Blanco, pomegranate juice, and other margarita staples. Check out the full recipe below.
1 1/2 ounces Tequila Don Julio Blanco
2 1/2 ounces pomegranate juice
2 teaspoons fine sugar
1/2 ounce lime juice
Sugar (to rim glass)
1 lime wedge
Combine Don Julio Blanco, pomegranate juice, fine sugar and lime juice in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well. Rim margarita glass with sugar. Strain ingredients into margarita glass. Garnish with lime.
Rocker Marilyn Manson and television host Chelsea Handler were just a few of the celebrities on hand to celebrate the launch of Belvedere Red at The Box in Los Angeles. As with most Belevedere events there was of course a bevy of specialty cocktails to choose from including the Belvedere Breeze, Belvedere Heat, and Belvedere Gimlet. Other notable guests in attendance included actress Lindsay Lohan, actor Shia Labeouf, MTV reality star Audrina Partridge, and much more. As part of the RED initiative a portion of the proceeds from sales of Belvedere Red will be donated to the Global Fund to fights AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria.

I came across these Captain Morgan ads, or “films” as they like to call them, via YouTube a few weeks ago and they’re honestly pretty entertaining. The commercials all come with interesting titles like “To Life, Love & Loot” or “This Is How You Get The Party Started.” I thought it was pretty interesting how each commercial focuses on some kind of chaotic scene and then Captain Morgan comes along to save the day in some uniquely creative way, whether he’s breaking dishes or showing off some impressive platform diving. Check out this latest Captain Morgan commercial which was released about three months ago and has already reached over a quarter of a million views. Obviously there’s a whole slew of people who find their commercials just as entertaining as I do.
I’m sorry folks but I only saw the beach a total of five days this summer, it’s entirely too hot in Atlanta, and I can’t wait to wear my boots so quite frankly I’m over summer. SO over it. But what I’m not over are those delightfully refreshing cocktails that are so present during the summer months. I’m a huge fan of summery drinks so I’ll be drinking them all year long, but if you happen to switch up your drinks to match the season then feel free to savor the last days of summer with one of these cocktails from Belvedere Vodka. The Moet Rose Lounge continued its series of plush events with an event hosted by R&B crooner Trey Songz in Miami over the weekend. I attended the Moet Rose Lounge here in Atlanta a few weeks ago and although I had a blast I have to admit I am a bit jealous that the Miami stop included a special appearance by the one and only Will Smith (sans Jada). Here’s a quick video recap of all that went down at The Setai Miami.
To not be much of a drinker, producer/rapper Pharrell Williams sure is doing his thing in the liquor/spirits world. Pharrell recently launched Qream Liqueur and it now looks like he’s representing Smirnoff as well. The producer appears in a unique one-minute ad for the vodka brand which hit the internet late last week. It’s a pretty cool ad, but I’m still trying to figure out why Pharrell looks so sad. If I had access to unlimited amounts of Qream Liqueur and Smirnoff I would be quite the happy camper.
