For me, good food and even better cocktails go together like peas and carrots, Jay Z and Beyonce, Siri and iPhones. Well, you get the picture…So, anytime I come across an establishment that has great food and cocktails I’m always willing to spread the word. During a recent trip to Jacksonville, Florida, I was invited to have dinner at Atlantic Beach restaurant Ocean 60 and it was quite the enjoyable experience.
Described as a “fine dining restaurant,” Ocean 60 features an ever-changing array of seafood dishes and a drink menu filled with martinis, classic cocktails, specialty mojitos, and other Lushworthy delights. I’m sure you foodies out there are eager to hear about the kind of meals Ocean 60 is dishing out, but first, we talk cocktails.
I had the opportunity to sample both the “Blueberry Lemon Collins” and the “Strawberry Rita.” I love a good margarita, especially one that’s made using fresh fruit, so the “Strawberry Rita” was a cocktail I knew I had to try. Although the “Strawberry Rita” at Ocean 60 does call for sour mix and lemon-lime soda, it’s not nearly as sweet as your typical chain restaurant margarita. And that could be either a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you like your margaritas. The real star during my dinner at Ocean 60 was the “Blueberry Lemon Collins,” a cocktail that’s made using Van Gogh Blueberry Vodka, muddled blueberries, lemon, and club soda. A far cry from your standard “Tom Collins,” but a tasty concoction nonetheless.
I’m still kicking myself over my decision not to sample any of the wines served at Ocean 60. For some reason, I can never pull myself away from ordering cocktails whenever I’m out having dinner. But if it’s wine you fancy then Ocean 60′s got plenty of vino for you to choose from, two pages to be exact.
Surprisingly, two of my foodie favorites at Ocean 60 are on opposite ends of the food spectrum. The first was the decadent “Bananas Fosters Bread Pudding” and I feel extremely confident in saying that it was the best dessert I’ve had all year. The bread pudding was incredibly rich thanks to the bananas foster reduction and the ice cream served on top was perfect. I also fell in love with their “The Goddess Salad,” which combines chopped romaine, apples, toasted almonds, dried cranberries, bacon, corn, goat cheese, cherry tomatoes, and Greek Goddess vinaigrette. So deliciously satisfying. I’m not one for making meals out of salads, but that can easily be done with “The Goddess Salad.” As far as my actual meal, which I could only manage about six forkfuls of (I told ya “The Greek Goddess” was a beast!), the fish was fresh and the medley of vegetables paired with it was an ideal accompaniment.
