I’m all for putting my own twist on a classic cocktail, so when I was challenged by Maker’s Mark to create a unique and creative spin on the Mint Julep for their #JulepOff, I was down for the cause.
If you live in or have ever visited the South, then you know that we take our sweet tea very seriously. It’s practically pumping through our veins. So, for my #JulepOff cocktail I knew I wanted to incorporate sweet tea somehow. And to up the ante on creativity just a tad, I chose to use a lemon simple syrup to create the sweet tea effect. In addition to bourbon, mint is a primary ingredient in a Mint Julep, so I chose to keep that addition.
When it comes to the annual Kentucky Derby, the Mint Julep is probably one of the first things to come to mind, especially if you’re a Lushworthy individual such as myself. The relatively simple cocktail has been associated with the Kentucky Derby for nearly a century now and is made using a combination of bourbon, mint leaf, water and sugar. Over time, a number of “remixed” versions of the Mint Julep have been introduced and if you’re hoping to break from tradition when the Kentucky Derby airs this Saturday then I’ve got a few cocktails you may want to consider.
The first is Wild Turkey’s “Bourbon Mojito,” which calls for the unexpected addition of ginger beer and if you’re looking for a really unique spin on the Mint Julep then there’s always Bulleit Bourbon’s “The Ginger Julep ’68 Fastback.” I’ve also included the recipe to the Lucid Absinthe-made “The Cool & Skinny,” a cocktail that may not be made using bourbon and isn’t reminiscent of the Mint Julep, but does channel the overall excitement of the Kentucky Derby. As always, you can find the drink recipes for all of the cocktails mentioned below. Cheers!
